On 22 March 2019, the Flemish government approved the Flemish Flemish Artificial Intelligence Policy Plan. Flanders wants to invest 32 million euros per year in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The policy plan consists of three components that complement and reinforce each other: first a research component, aimed at strengthening AI research in Flanders.

The research component will be filled in concretely with the Artificial Intelligence Flanders research program. ICON (Interdisciplinary Cooperative Research) is a formula for demand-driven, cooperative research.
